a man who is "of sound mind" is one who keeps the inner madman under lock and key

what’s genius?
I don’t know
but I do know that
the difference between a madman and a
professional is
that
a pro does as well as he can within what
he has set out to do
and a madman
does exceptionally well at what
he can’t help doing.

[Charles Bukowski, from ‘artistic selfishness,’ in What Matters Most is How You Walk Through the Fire; title quotation by Paul Valéry]

  1. I have recently "discovered" Bukowski. I like.

  2. I'm pretty selective about him - they seem to have published everything he ever wrote, including grocery lists and pen scribbles - but what I like, I really like.
