Jeeves, of course, is a gentleman’s gentlemen, not a butler, but if the call comes, he can buttle with the best of them

1 If you had to have one job that you have had previously, which one would you want again?
no shushing
if it were possible to go back to 'the way it used to be', I would love to be the lead cataloger at the public library where I worked from the end of law school until I moved up nort'. I loved the challenge of locating an item in its proper place. Prioritizing in a sometimes overwhelming environment is one of my strengths. I like to work on my own, without requiring a lot of direct supervision. Cataloging appeals to my sense of order, self-discipline, and creativity. (Those who've survived the battle between 800s and FIC, or 300s v. 600s might appreciate that latter point.) Most basically, though, I loved being surrounded by books, and the people who are drawn to them.

sleuth
2 If you could look through anyone's personnel file at work, whose would you pick?
the nature of my current role makes this question hilariously inappropriate. I would like to keep getting to know Blackbeard and Lord Farquaad, but not to the detriment of my continued employment. I'll wait for them to share what they want me to know.

3 If you could train a pet bird to do one thing for you and always return home again, what would it do?
Kwik-E-Mart
oooh, I would love a messenger pigeon who could run to the Kwik-E-Mart for milk, bread, bananas and/or eggs. It would need to be an extremely strong pigeon with good interpersonal skills.

4 If you could have had one person in your life be more candid than they were (or are), who would it be?
my former spouse, H. Although compared to me he seemed a gregarious extrovert with chatterbox tendencies, at his base he's pretty quiet, and also prone to withholding comment when sharing might risk conflict. That combo meant that our conversations were sometimes more polite or superficial than they were constructive or even meaningful. We'd both have benefited if either of us had been more candid.

5 If you could completely remove someone's vocal cords for a year, whose would they be?
hmm. How to say this without risk of being deported?
And why for just a year?!
[]

6 If you could ensure something about Heaven besides its existence, what would it be?
the listing said this is "life sized"--as if there ARE monkey butlers, for reals
    •
a generalized mute button
    • hot & cold tea on tap
    • quiet space to be still
    • loved ones close by, especially kitties I have love and lost too soon
    • lots of soft green grass for running barefoot (with no allergic reaction)
    • for that matter—no more headaches
    • an actual monkey butler

7 If you had to name the worst thing you've ever done to someone emotionally, what would it be?
I've been a bad friend to some people who were good friends to me. Regardless of the reason or circumstances around it, that was a terrible thing to do. My regret can't change anything, but does result in trying to do better.

[from If2: 500 New Questions for the game of life; the title quotation is by P.G. Wodehouse, from Stiff Upper Lip, Jeeves]

she was one of those languid women made of dark honey, smooth and sweet and terribly sticky

gummy bears
1 How many gummy bears can you fit into your mouth?
not as many as one might think. My mouth is surprisingly small, even having had four extra permanent teeth (as well as the wisdom set) removed in order to make the rest fit. That lower volume also means that my gag reflex is heightened, as all the structures are closer together. (TMI, anyone?) It also means that I avoid stuffing more food than I can comfortably accommodate into my mouth.

2 You've turned into the main character in the last TV show you watched. Who are you?
Parker, from Leverage: Redemption (2021- ). She is played by Beth Riesgraf. Extremely fit and full of energy, drop-dead gorgeous, very funny and seemingly unselfconscious, creative and thoughtful and affectionate... I would LOVE to be Parker!
Parker

3 How many gadgets do you have at home that beep at you?

not many, and not for long if I can avoid it! The microwave (because it's old and there is no soundless option), the dehumidifier (asking to be emptied), and the smoke/CO2 detector. I absolutely loathe anything blinking, flashing, glowing, or God forbid fucking beeping.
Ironically, as I write this the trash pickup service is outside, backing toward my driveway, raising the dead with its reverse alert beeps. Gaaaaah

4 What's the craziest thing you've thrown across a room in a temper?
I've only ever thrown two things: shoes (at Nick, who had earned a few metaphorical bruises), and my engagement ring in its box (at H, who had just told me he was standing me up on one of his few visits during the year we were engaged, in order to have dinner and go to a high school play with his former girlfriend). None of the throwing was intended to physically injure anyone, and in fact never hit a human target. The latter seemed laden with meaning, though the reflex to chuck something at him was satisfied by the nearest chuckable thing to hand and just happened to be the most "significant" item imaginable.

5 In a twenty-first-century update, what items might your true love receive over the twelve days of Christmas?
dude, there really ARE 9 new emojis!
    • First: one plant-based protein meal, prepackaged and delivered to your door
    • Second: two road construction re-routes that do not appear in GPS navigation
    • Third: three urgent software updates
    • Fourth: four traffic circles
    • Fifth: five cannabis dispensaries
    • Sixth: six miracle skin treatments
    • Seventh: seven political arguments
    • Eighth: eight unique streaming services
    • Ninth: nine new emojis
    • Tenth: ten remade superhero movies exactly like all the rest of the superhero movies ever made
    • Eleventh: eleven inexplicable slang terms
    • Twelfth: twelve-character passwords

6 Which one of your friends would you not trust as your house sitter or pet-sitter, and why?
the list of people I would trust as my house-sitter is SO short! My brother, my walking buddy, and my parents (but only under certain circumstances). Why?
trust but verify

My brother would get in, do whatever was needed, and get out. He wouldn't even glance at anything that wasn't on his agenda. He's too damned busy, and also highly motivated against borrowing trouble.
My walking buddy is absolutely trustworthy. She would take it all in, and would probably comment on something that she noticed that was different from her last visit, but definitely would not dig.
My parents would do everything necessary ... and then some. I would absolutely come home to a fridge stocked with fruits and maybe vegetables and possibly dairy. It's highly likely that something that hadn't been in top condition would be repaired, cleaned, or replaced.
Everyone else I might even think of would create some questions in my mind. They might be snoopy, they might be prone to pranks, or they might be flaky enough to be unreliable. (Also, there are others I would trust completely, but are nowhere near enough to make it realistic.)

7 What was the last thing to make your fingers sticky?
ugh, I do hate being sticky.
I think it was a jar of jelly that seems to ooze a slight film of viscous goo upon itself and everything in its realm, despite having been cleaned numerous times.

not-writing is a good deal worse than writing

1. What's the best thing to inherit other than money?
loot
casks of jewels, bars of gold, and stock certificates.
    Or maybe labeled photographs.

2. What one thing would you most like to happen tomorrow?
cancellation of the Winter Storm Watch. Winter is fine, it's to be expected and normal for this time of year. We don't need heavy snowfalls with 55 mph winds to make us clear on that point.

3. Who is the person with whom you've been most infatuated?
JWB
he called himself Johnnie Walker Blue.

4. In what part of the day does time go slowest and fastest?
slowest: the last hour of a normal workday
fastest: the last hour before bed, where I'd like to read just one more paragraph, or chapter, or two.

5. What one person's thoughts would you most like to read?
the Dalai Lama. Is he always 'on a higher plane of existence'? Does he manage to turn off the unnecessary and just flow serenely through life? Or does he swear at traffic, get songs stuck in his head, fondly remember classmates, wonder about stuff and then internet-search it? Does he have a silly sense of humor? Does he think he's weird?

6. Who is the person you'd least like to touch?
this question first made me laugh, and then I really had to think about it. I don't exactly keep a list of stuff I don't want to do, y'know?
It's safe to say that anyone of whom I am not fond (and, frankly, many people of whom I am fond—but from a distance!) would fall into this category. My touchy-feely-ness is very dramatically limited.

7. What is the best quality you inherited from your parents?
    good listening

8. Who is the friend you most often disagree with?
he knows who he is, though since he recently told me that he cannot be bothered to read the blog anymore, my reticence in sharing his name is probably misplaced

9. What's the best ritual of your daily life?
lately, it's going to bed early and getting up early just to spend time with my temporary roommate at his favorite parts of the day. He's extra snuggly and loving before and after sleeping a night away.

10. What are the most useful jobs you've ever had?
I haven't had that many jobs, and each was useful in some way.
        • bakery: how to get along with people very different from me. Cake decorating. Baking by eye.
        • school: how to be a trustworthy person. Film splicing. Working through a hangover.
        • restaurant: how to cook, for crissakes. How to hold a knife. How to clean.
        • educational center: how to lead. How to gracefully accept management. How to live up to someone else's expectations and imagination, and flourish. Prioritizing.
        • grad assistantships: how academic work is really done, both in classroom and on paper.
        • library: how to love a good puzzle. How to manage a budget and staff.
        • bank—
° bank 1: diligence. How to work with difficult people (ver. 14).
° bank 2: learning on the fly. How to keep busy when being poorly managed
(i.e. staple-pulling).
° bank 3: perseverance. Of course, how to settle an estate.
        • firm: what not to do. What kind of person to avoid. How to maintain composure when pushed beyond known limits.
        • current: how to get into the groove and stay there. Maintaining good sleep habits. The importance of asking questions.

11. In which year of your life did you change the most?
    age 34

12. What's the best thing you've ever gotten for free?
free lunch, baby!
    advice, sex, or lunch

13. What is the thing you are best at?
writing a long, funny, deep, fantastic letter

14. What was the luckiest moment in your life?
    it's yet to come

15. What is the single most important thing you have ever learned?
that there's a lot I don't know. At that point, I started to really learn.

[from here; the title quotation is by Flannery O'Connor, from The Habit of Being]

8.19.2015

you will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks

I'm thinking too much about door locks and window seals and winterizing a sandpoint well. The progression of obsessions is not surprising--moving from finding a house to caring for it--but I'd dearly love for it all to just shut off for a while. Like, maybe until the financing is approved and I'm certain that this will happen after all!
The Mag-pie, stretching
Work has been a little odd lately. I think I'm dancing right on the edge of the dress code, which for me means my pants have been a little less "dress" and more "business casual"--though I tend to wear more professional blouses to compensate. I have gotten a couple of "Erk?" looks from supervisors in the area, so I won't be surprised if one of them puts the hammer down. It's been a good, comfortable run, anyway.
"it's been awhile
Since I've seen the way
the candles light your face,
And it's been awhile..."
I finally finished The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, and then digested it for at least a week before trying to review it. It's such a strange book!
    An excerpt from my review:
I wanted to like this book. I wanted to be transformed by the simple, yet life-changing magic of tidying. I wanted to be swept away by the bliss of envisioning, and then living, the life I've always imagined, surrounded by all and only joy-bringing things.
I also kind of wanted to hate this book. I wanted to be so offended and dismayed by the arrogance and xenophobia of the author that I couldn't read one more line. I wanted to throw the book at the wall in disgust.
Spackle, stretching
My attention span is hummingbirdesque. Eensy. Wittle.
"You got a kazoo?
Man, this is crappy."

I don't even like superhero stuff, but that's pretty awesome.
Sister Magnatron, requesting a snack

Tomorrow (barring anything unforeseen taking my time away before then), I shall post the annual Birthday Gimme List. I know you'all are dying for it.

6.23.2015

there was always a part of me that hoped for more, and so there was a part of me that was always a fool

I've been listening to a mix CD that I made for Sleek, my old friend/whatever at the library. It's a good mix, set up well in music and in lyrics, so it's easy to hear even after all this time. The funny thing about it is how transparent it is. Was I trying to be so obvious, or did I think I was sneaky? Regardless, I've had more than a few surprised laughs as the next song pops up and I sing a line or two and am transported instantly back to those feelings.

Say something, say something - anything
I've shown you everything
Give me a sign

That we remain friends to this day is a sign of his true kindness.
I saw my new dentist this afternoon. The office was chosen out of the online list provided by my insurance (and with the obvious benefit that I don't know the dentists there, which is not the case all over town). They're in a brand-new building by the highway (flanked by a Caribou Coffee, which is unfortunate). The office is a little futuristic and stark, but it was comfortable enough for the purpose. There were X-rays, a panoramic X-ray of my head (necessitating the removal of all six earrings, which was disconcerting and difficult!), cleaning, jabbing-poking-bleeding-crying inside, flossing, and a quite comprehensive check by the dentist, not only of teeth but my whole face, basically. I was given the thumbs-up and released for another six months. W00t.
Work has been incredibly schizo lately: either ferociously busy, so that I'm almost tripping over myself rushing to get things done, or so godawful dead boring that I can hardly stay awake to jab myself with a paperclip to spur some movement. To be honest, I'm not comfortable with either of the extremes, and wonder if there was a way we could organize things so that it's a more reasonable flow. Alas, not my problem. It's weird to be so totally not management after all this time. I don't miss managing the people (AT. ALL.) but the things, the flow? I miss that.
Because my life is insane, I'm sort of being stalked again. This one's not dangerous (are they ever?) but just profoundly irritating. I do sometimes wish I could disappear.
And now my computer's informed me that I'm running on reserve power. It has, allegedly, three minutes to live. Guess I'll cut this short.

I'd love you to love me
I'm begging you to beg me

the only weapon we have is comedy

This week, I need a laugh. Or a smile. Or even just a less-angry grimace. So, far from my typical activities, I'm watching silly stuff on YouTube. Here's three of the best:

beauty, truth, and Grace in all simplicity

Highlights of the 12 days of moving (oh, would that it were only twelve!):

12 dozen boxes of books
11 power strips/outlet splitters
10 chairs
9 bookcases (5 fully dismantled, 3 folded)
8 bottles of alcohol given away
7 packages scone mix in what I'd thought was an empty cupboard
6 lamps
5 boxes marked "misc"
4 computers
3 Christmas trees
2 cameras
1 clock

Where did I get all this stuff?!

[the title quotation is by William Shakespeare, from The Phoenix and the Turtle]

of all eloquence a nickname is the most concise; of all arguments the most unanswerable

June 26: verdure
We haven't had measurable rain in so long, I'm going to need to leave the state to enjoy the verdure of summer!

You Are a Mouse
You are a quiet and observant creature. You may not have much to say, but you always know what's going on.
You are good at getting things done without attracting attention. You are sneaky, but only in a good way.
You are well organized. You develop a system for everything you do.
You notice and analyze everything. You can be a bit fearful, but it's only because you are aware of every detail of your surroundings.

God gives the nuts, but he does not crack them.

January 8: vinaceous
"I wish you a vinaceous scab on the end of your perfectly appropriate over-large nose," I thought, as I gritted my teeth and creatively answered another of her outrageously intrusive questions.

February 8: zeitgeist
A2 in the early '90s had a Zeitgeist somewhat like I imagine must have existed in the truly cool academic and cultural cities a decade or two earlier: never-ending ubiquitous coffee shops and independent bookstores; the pervasive scent of hemp overriding even the reek of Polo cologne and Obsession perfume; lots of beret-wearing for the sake of being "different" (just like everybody else); and even the most shameful aspect of all: reading Kafka at the window-table of a cafe, dressed all in black...with the book upside down.

[the title quotation is by - naturally - Franz Kafka himself]

The 31-Day Photo Challenge

Day 30: A picture that can always make you smile
A "bait shack" in my hometown, which turns over ownership fairly regularly, had been closed for a few months when this message appeared on their exterior sign. It made me laugh hard enough that I drove around the block to take the picture.

[title quotation by Jack Handey; in its entirety, it reads: "As the evening sky faded from a salmon color to a sort of flint gray, I thought back to the salmon I caught that morning, and how gray he was, and how I named him Flint."]

8.08.2011

had the price of looking been blindness, I would have looked

The 31-Day Photo Challenge

Day 08: A picture that makes you laugh
For one year, my next-door neighbor through the thin wall was this guy, who shall be known as "Dan'l". He lived in the studio apartment, rarely had any visitors (and when he did, it was his sister). His unfortunate tendency to speak loudly into his telephone provided me with far more information than neighbors usually have about each other: he was a diver (including rescue-diving), from the group of four cities to the west of here, intending (however vaguely) to go to medical school when his finances were in order, and he did not intend to stay in this area for very long. We had also, on more than one occasion, watched the same TV programs at the same time, to the point that I would turn off the sound on mine so I didn't have the annoying stereo effect through the wall. We would laugh at the same time during the programs (or, in the case of Extreme Home Makeover, cry at the same time), which was odd to say the least. I had apparently mentioned Dan'l once or twice, because one evening, while talking with The Cat, I mentioned that he was just then arriving home - his Jeep was pulling into the parking lot. "You should take a picture of him sometime." Out of the corner of my eye, I saw my camera on the coffee table. "Hang on...."

I took three pictures, as he was walking away from the Jeep and toward the building.

I didn't think anything of it, really, until I loaded them into my computer a few days later and looked at them at actual-size (rather than in the little camera window). As one can tell from this last of the three photos, he had clearly noticed that I was taking pictures of him - he's looking straight at the camera with an expression that is, at best, puzzled. Since we'd encountered each other in the hallways once or twice since then and he hadn't said anything, he must have (a) thought I was a really mellow stalker, and (b) not been too upset. I was completely mortified - and I still laugh, every time I see this photo.

Why is this so funny? Why can't I stop watching it? Good lord.

a promiscuous person is a person who is getting more sex than you are

This item arrived at my place of toil the other day. The front is bad enough (the metaphor is frightening, when you think about it - the giant spike, rising through the pink folds...?!?!?!)
but the back, ugh! His name is "Knightridge." Exactly what is that supposed to bring to mind? And why are his face & neck so relatively clean, if his right hand & arm look like he's been working in a coal mine all the live-long day? She's also got a surprisingly frog-shaped bottom half.

he who makes a paradise of his bread makes a hell of his hunger

Sometimes it's just not meant to be.
This morning, I was only a couple of minutes late for work. Went into the kitchen to make a sandwich for lunch. As I was pulling the bread out of the bag, I thought, "This loaf has lasted a long time. Nice!" As I dropped it into the container and reached for the peanut butter, my attitude changed; that was when I saw the deep scale of mold reaching across the bottom crust of both pieces. I lifted the bag and inspected the remainder. Unsurprisingly, it was all affected. No sandwich for lunch.
This evening, I finally got settled enough to bake the cake I've been meaning to take to work for a while. It's a scratch recipe, rather complicated, but I [foolishly] assumed I had all the ingredients, since I'd located the one that I don't usually have on hand--lemon pudding mix. I preheated the oven and started mixing the batter, and while doing so I read ahead to the ingredients for the glaze; damn it, I don't have any orange juice. Since it's poured over the cooled cake, though, I knew I could take the rest of the glaze ingredients, buy orange juice on the way to work, mix it and pour it there, and no one would know or care that it had been freshly done. Problem solved.
Until, that is, I got to the point in the directions where I needed to add the eggs. It called for four. I had...none. Two eggs' worth of Egg Beaters, but no actual eggs. A glance at the clock revealed that the local grocery store was closed (24 minutes prior). I could change clothes and drive to the chain on the edge of town, to buy two freakin' eggs (and some orange juice, of course, and naturally some bread while I'm there), drive back home, finish mixing the cake, bake it for nearly an hour, cool it, and glaze it--all before going to bed for what would undoubtedly be a restful sleep.
Or I could do what I did, which was to turn off the oven, scoop the beginnings of the batter into a sealed bowl, plop it in the fridge, and resolve to buy donuts for work. It really, really wasn't meant to be.

I'm the player to be named later.

  1. How vain are you about how you look? on what sort of scale? I try to maintain a certain degree of cleanliness and situational appropriateness at all times, but that's due more to the distressing habit of some friends to just stop by on a whim, and not so much because I'm really feeling it.
  2. When you were little what was your favorite TV show? Bugs Bunny
  3. If someone was going to make a movie or TV show about your life, who would play you and why? Drew Barrymore is a given at this point. We are, allegedly, twins.
  4. Who is your favorite Major League Baseball team? How about your favorite player? meh. I am marginally a Cubs fan, even more marginally a Twins fan (don't tell the folks at home). I like Joe Mauer, and I've always thought that Augie Ojeda was adorable. All time, though? Gary Gaetti. I'm a sucker for an invaluable utility man.
  5. What is your favorite baseball-related movie? I love sports movies--just another way that I am, as Nick would have put it, "a guy's girl." Subject to change: Bull Durham.
  6. What is one lesson you have learned in the past year? There is something about me that is mystically, hypnotically mesmerizing to people that I could very easily fall in love with, but just not in the way that makes them fall in love with me.
  7. Tell us about one of your childhood memories. When I was 8 or 9, I was allowed to stay home alone on New Years' Eve when my parents, brother and sister all had plans. Though I was by myself fairly often, it was only for much shorter periods of time--so this was a big deal. I promptly turned it into a complete disaster. After turning on Dick Clark's Rockin' Eve (my NYE entertainment of choice) and pulling out my snack stash of Nacho Cheese Doritos and Dr. Pepper (the combination of which sounds terrifically vile at the moment), I sat on the couch to lace on my roller skates. For no good reason that I can possibly give, I decided that I should break pretty much every cardinal rule that existed in the household, the primary of which was to never, ever skate in the house. Music playing, I skated in circles for a while, swigging Dr. P and smooshing nacho cheese into the carpet with abandon. At some point, I decided that the music was entirely too quiet. I skated to the TV (yes, this was in the archaic pre-remote days) and cranked up the volume (still to a degree that would be barely audible to most 9-y-o's today), and then skated backward to the couch for more snacking. I lowered myself onto the couch...and missed. My skates flew out from under me and my tailbone bounced off the wooden edge of the couch, below and in front of the cushion, bearing the entirety of my body weight. Thank God I was abnormally small or I'd have probably jammed the thing straight up and out my mouth. As it was, I immediately flopped onto my stomach, in complete agony. I've never removed anything from my feet so fast as I did those skates. When I could finally breathe (I'd knocked the wind from myself), I slowly and carefully put the skates away, cleaned up the Dorito mess, turned the TV down and off, brushed my teeth and went to bed...at around 8:00 PM. I couldn't sit, lie down, or stand comfortably for months after that. Talk about learning a lesson the hard way: that's why I wasn't supposed to roller skate in the house!
  8. How do you handle sticky situations? Do you have a method? If so, what is it? depends on the situation. I am less diplomatic with every passing moment, though I can pretend to be a grownup when I really have to be. In general, I probably just try to fade into the woodwork. Safest for all, that way.
  9. Do you think people talk about you behind your back? I'm sure that they do. Life's too short to get too bent about it, though.
