a dress makes no sense unless it inspires men to want to take it off you

April 8: numinous
Although today was probably not as numinous as one might seek in an Easter Sunday, it was still an awesome day of friends, fun, food, golf, Yoda, silliness, and cake. Which is, I suppose, food.

"The Dress" template
As y'all know, my brother's wedding looms in the middle distance. I'm in the early stages of pre-shopping for something to wear. I started with this as a template. If it looks familiar, it is Jennifer Hudson (?) in the Weight Watchers ad that is appearing on television and various websites at the moment. I *love* the dress, particularly the style of the bodice. But no, I don't plan to wear something that white or that tight to someone else's wedding. (Particularly a relatively casual wedding in the middle of the afternoon.)
So, what to wear? And how to shop for something so vague?
Well, I began with a couple of my go-to catalog websites. Talbots is so very hit-or-miss for me; the great majority of their clothes are either way too old-styled or too richie-rich glitzy for my taste, but every now and then (as in the case of the gray cardigan with white polka-dots) they come up with something that's too perfect for me to pass up. They have an option that I'm considering, if for no other reason than because the color is just right. I'm not wild about the fabric, and the cut may still be too slim for me, but it's a possibility.

The next possibility is from J.Peterman, which has for years been my go-to for dress-up clothes. Their current offerings are basically too tame for my taste, but they've brought back the Derby Dress, which I loved the first time and which caught my eye again.  The color is described as "light blue" but it sure looks green to me. I'm not sure how much of a problem that would be with my skin tone....

The Cat did a quick Reference search for me and came up with an unedited list of options. Lots of them were (a) white; (b) out of stock; (c) WAY out of my price range; and/or (d) un.God.ly. See, e.g....
oh, Herve.
The Herve Leger Scoop-Neck Bandage Dress. Ohgoodlord.
Ahem. Moving on. My old & dear friend Jennifer suggested Modcloth. If you haven't tried it, it's pretty terrific. Fancy clothes, but with an edge of fun and something new. I only did a quick run through one category, but I've found three that I really like. My top choice is the Draped Darling:

Followed by the Classic Stunner:

And Cinch You Asked:

What do y'all think?

  1. I did not notice the "butt-enhancement" of that Herve dress. WTF!?

Of the four serious choices (including the shiny one):
Shiny--too 'eveningy' for an afternoon wedding
Draped--I think this is my favorite. Looks comfy, casual and dressy all at once.
Classic--I'd KILL for a picture of you in this! It's so very not-everyday-Amy. And it's pretty. Would it feel right to you?
Cinch--I love this one. But, you have a lot of black/white stuff, so...?

But, actually, I thought you'd decided on a dress would drape around your ankles (and toes) the whole day. ;-)

    1. I'm going to need some very special shoes. 8)

You're right about the shiny. I hadn't thought of that. Too 'slinky'. Slinkish? Slinkly?

Classic = I don't know. I like the bodice a lot, but the skirt is froofroo to the MAX. I might look like I have a few extra hips in there.

Clinch = yeah, I do have a lot of black/white. sigh

Drapey = fun, unexpected but still dressy, and guaranteed to stand out. I should buy it right now so I don't lose my nerve.

      Now, what shoes??

    2. Uggs. Or knock-offs. ;-)

Actually those big strappy boot-shoe things are really in and they'd cover your toes, ankles, instep and all the spaces in between. They'd also be warm as all get-out... :-) Like these, only not sporty of course. Better example.

    3. They look like hooves! :Ø I'd rather take my chances with the 'rentals.

Warm as all get-out is right, btw. It's going to be like 120 degrees with 100% humidity. My feet would cook like hobo dinners!

  2. Does that involve shrinkage? If so, then perhaps I should try that in the summer... lol

Hooves is right. I'm not a fan either.

    1. I got one big loud NO on Drapey ("too much up top") and a surprisingly fervent yes to Clinch, despite (or prehaps because of) its similarity to what I've already worn. Methinks I'll have to keep looking for possibilities. Modcloth is a whole lot of fun, though, so I'm not complaining.

      Oh, and Uggs--NEVER! :D

  3. personally, I like the Empire dress but, agree it may be too dressy for an afternoon affair. The Derby dress does look green to me as well. The Draped looks Amish to me for some reason and not particularly flattering to anyone. I like the lines in the Classic but, I think the Cinch is the pick of this litter ;)

    1. Amish? ::lol:: I think that Drapey would look good on me (or, rather, I would look good in it) but I might lend it a rather 'earthy' air that would detract from its "sixties"-ish vibe - which is what I particularly like about it. But I appreciate the male perspective, for sure. Clinch, eh? That tells me something about your aesthetic sensibilities. There will be another dress post in a day or two... I look forward to your comments; please share!

    2. of course, I am glad to share my perspective with you... I am sure in the end, you will look great though in whatever choice you make ;)

    3. You'll be able to decide that, too--I'm sure there will be *lots* of photos. (If not here, at least on FB.)

    4. I look forward to seeing them ;)

  4. Draped, definitely. At first I thought Cinch, because it was immediately the dress I imagined seeing you wear. But, on second perusal, the Draped is unexpected, but you would look stunning wearing it. I disagree that there is too much up top on that one. Methinks it's the picture making it look fuller than it actually is.

    1. John, that is just rude. Just because we like dresses, you assume we need to lose weight to wear them? feh
