just visit now and then

quiescent
The yen to spend time with them builds until I think I won't be able to stand it, and then each will show up--on his own unfathomable schedule--and it will be as if no time has passed, after which the urgency will again be quiescent for months until that cycle starts again.
natant
She claims to lack the ability to float, but I believe all humans are essentially natant to some degree even if some fight it more than others.
tantivy
Spending time with him can be maddening, because even at rest he seems to be hurtling through life tantivy, without regard for consequences.
contemn
It is perverse, I know, for me to blithely contemn my fellow attorneys but to take offense when others do.
bandbox
After living in this spacious unit for nearly two years, my next abode will likely feel like a bandbox at first, but reduced rent and utilities costs should balance out the loss of altitude.

December's killing me, money-wise. It always does, and for some reason it still comes as a surprise. My annual law license renewal comes due this month, plus the quarterly water bill. My budget doesn't come close to allowing an extra $250 to go out in one month! Plus the fact that, after a long and thoughtful discussion with a knowledgeable friend on the subject, I've decided that it's in my best interest to get winter tires for my car. Although snow's been in the forecast for a while, and in fact it has snowed one day this year so far (though it was just the little pellety stuff that doesn't accumulate), it's remained warm enough to render the tires moot as yet. I'll need to get them within the next week or so, I'd guess, to be on the safe side. The drive home can be godawful in the wrong weather conditions. I've had the winter gear in the trunk for a couple of weeks already, though, to be sure. In any case, I'm not praying for snow or cold weather, and this would be an excellent time for me to stumble on a forgotten cache of unclaimed thousands.
I've stayed on the right side of the nasty bugs floating around the area lately. Lots of days I've wondered if I was going to get it For Real, but it's been very temporary and very mild, by comparison. A few people from work have had really bad stuff, and of course the flu is never anything to take for granted. I'm calling my doctor for an annual checkup tomorrow and will be getting my flu shot then. I sing the praises of my Neti-pot, overdoses of Vitamin C, homemade chicken soup with a lot of onions and garlic (and a little lemon), and an almost unreal amount of tea.
In the past month or so I've seen three of my favorite guys. That sounds a little stalkerish, so I should probably explain. First, my Animal Brain Lawyer friend came out here for dinner and a few drinks. A couple of weeks later, a veryvery good friend from high school stopped by on his way to the Big City to the East (for a work thing), and we were able to meet for lunch. Finally, on Thursday I had a rare visit from an old and dear friend who I met in this area but who isn't around here very often anymore. He's sort of like a comet, now that I think about it.... Anyway, the three of them could not be much more different from each other, and even to bring them all up at this point seems strange except that their uniqueness rather oddly lumps them together in this way. I feel very fortunate, very blessed to know them, to spend time with them, and to be on the receiving end of such unexpected gifts as these.

[the title quotation is by Katharine Hepburn, and reads in its entirety: "Sometimes I wonder if men and women really suit each other. Perhaps they should live next door and just visit now and then."]
