  6. Do you smoke? if so, what brand? never
  7. Why do you choose to listen to the music you listen to? because I like it? Qualitative questions are really hard (and ultimately pointless) to answer.

  9. Are personal ads acts of desperation? eh, I think it's the content rather than the existence that makes it desperate.
  10. Have you ever been/are you a vegetarian? I eat a lot of meatless meals (probably more than not) but it isn't from any sort of veg philosophy--it's more of a cheap/easy thing. Currently in my fridge are a pound of bacon, a pound of burger, and a half-pound of Canadian bacon. For instance.
  11. Who are the three most important musical artists in your life? R.E.M., Alkaline Trio, and Elbow

  23. Are the days of writing and mailing letters lost? nope, I still write at least one letter a week. More during the school year.
  24. What do you think about right before you go to sleep? nothing. I mean, I try to empty my mind, to varying degrees of success.
  25. Do I ever cross your mind - anytime? only as I try to answer these questions
  26. Have you ever solved a Rubik's Cube? never
  27. Why is everyone so emotionally and spiritually dead? I don't think that everyone is
  28. Are you? not "dead" per se...
  29. What can you feel burning up inside your head? at the moment, there is a sneeze burning a hole in my nose, and my head is somewhere between sore and aching, and I'm tired but not sleepy
  30. What life experience do you have? what is all of the experience of my life up to this point?? Uhm.
  31. Have you ever hit rock bottom? if I had to, I could come up with something

  41. Did you just lie to that question? no
  42. Do you always notice when you are lying? probably not
  43. Do you think that lying is so built into our culture that we can't help it? maybe so
  44. What are you fighting against? weight, irrelevance, and undue emotion
  45. What are you fighting for? fitness, comfort, and grace
  46. Why aren't you fighting? who says I'm not?

  52. Who cares what they think? pretty much everybody gives some thought to what the unknowable "they" think
  53. Do you ever let them stop you? yup, sometimes there are boundaries that a reasonable person won't cross
  54. What would you do if there were no limits? There are no limits. Go Do it. whatever. Infant.
  55. Courtney Love or Madonna? if I had to choose one: Madonna
  56. Do you have a negative attitude towards the opposite sex? no more than my own
  57. Can you imagine anything that would seriously improve the world? banning (and immediately destroying) leaf-blowers. Get a rake, people, or leave them wherever the fuck they lie. Leaves have been here for thousands of years longer than pristine lawns, and somehow humanity managed to survive. What is the fucking problem?! Beyond arrogance and ignorance, of course, and the need to make God damned noise all the damned time.
  58. Have you read the book Venus in Furs? Did it turn you on? I have not read Venus in Fur, which is probably the play to which this question refers
  59. Velvet Underground with or without Nico? no strong preference either way
  60. Are you sure you aren't pretentious (I've been reading some surveys that sound pretentious to me)? I'm pretentious about plenty of subjects, but I'm also not overly concerned about the opinions of some Internet survey writer twit.

  63. What do you imagine it feels like to be a member of the opposite sex? same thing, only with the key bits on the outside rather than the inside

  65. What do you think of the Atkins diet? it's probably not very healthy for extended periods, but in the short term it's probably pretty successful
  66. 'If it bleeds, I will fuck it.' How does that make you feel? I've never heard anyone actually say that, but I know some people who have had that attitude. What goes around comes around.
  67. Silence of the Lambs, Hannibal, or Red Dragon? Red Dragon, I suppose, though I haven't read the books.
  68. If Dr. Lecter were to visit you what would you do? ...die?
  69. Who is your favorite director of movies? Hal Hartley
  70. What is Kubrick's best film? I've only seen A Clockwork Orange
  71. Are you overly confident and blinded to your own faults? If you were you probably wouldn't know the extent of it. so why bother asking the question in the first place? Except to express something overly confident and blind to your own faults.
  72. Do you write your favorite bands on your clothing? not since I was about 12--if even then
  73. Are you wild and crazy? as I answered in the 43rd part (so much repetition!), "depending on the circumstances, I can be extremely crazy and very, very wild"
  74. Do you party like River Phoenix? you mean, literally to the death? No. Not even half that.
  75. What is it that you still are hiding? if I'm hiding it, why would I write about it on my blog?

  77. How attractive is a guy in a dress? the right guy in the right dress can be very attractive
  78. Why is it more acceptable for a girl to dress like a guy than for a guy to dress like a girl? this was obviously written a few years ago, and by someone with a mind not open to beauty
  79. Why is being a girl seen as somehow something less than being a guy? if that's still true, then anyone needs to turn and walk away from the "person" doing that "seeing"
  80. What are three things you value? solitude, affection, and quality footwear
  81. What are three things you normally do that go against those values in some way? go to work, very occasionally agree to volunteer, and suffer fools & pretend (as we all do in social situations)
  82. Name three things society in general values? money, status, and appearances
  83. Name three behaviors that society accepts as normal that go against those values? credit card debt, status is really a moving target anyway, and tolerance for "appearances" shifts all the time. What I was getting at there is things like decorating for holidays (have you noticed that "failure" to decorate for Independence Day is viewed suspiciously in certain neighborhoods, for example?) is no longer a personal choice, but a social obligation.
  84. Name three highly specific things you look for in a potential mate? To be clear: I'm not looking for a potential mate. But if I were... First, I don't truly care what kind of car someone drives, but if they drive the wrong car, they're out. I couldn't be involved with someone who drove a bright yellow car. It's too attention-seeking. Second, external interests. Gotta have some. I'm WAY too independent to deal with someone who has nothing going on except dating, and too much attention drives me absolutely up a wall. Finally, I have some really close relationships already. If I met someone who couldn't deal with that, or who wanted me to choose between them and my family and/or friends, there would be no contest. I'm a package deal.
  85. Who is the basis for your comparison when choosing a partner? "I am a part of all that I have met," Alfred, Lord Tennyson wrote (in Ulysses), and that sums it up very well. My family, my friends, those I've loved and lost, those I've loved and somehow managed to keep in my life... all of those relationships and people are folded into the mix, which is surely mostly subconscious, when I'm "choosing a partner." Which I'm not.
  86. Have you ever given someone multiple orgasms or received them yourself? ha! That's definitely outside the bounds of the subject of this blog
  87. The older generations thought the Beatles were hip. Now they think today's music is shocking. What could music evolve into that people might find more shocking ten years from now? if I knew that, I wouldn't be working in my current job at my current rate of pay, would I?
  88. Do you have any motives for your actions other than anger and lust? not at all: I'm a lizard
  89. Would you be more likely to rape someone or to kill someone? Eh, no
  90. What have you read by James Baldwin? Giovanni's Room
  91. Can you read Naked Lunch straight through in one sitting? I haven't tried - it's not on my list to read
  92. Are you a snob? in some ways, definitely
  93. If yes, in what regards? "good shoes," for sure. I'm snotty about the poetry I read (though I don't talk about it with the people who like the stuff I don't like, if that makes any sense). Coke-not-Pepsi. I hate getting sticky when I'm outside (which is the source of much amusement with the bff and fam). My office at work is generally extraordinarily tidy by comparison to other spaces in the department. I'm pretty picky about food. ...yeah, I'm a pain in the ass in nearly all ways. It's amazing that anyone can stand to be around me.
  94. Fill in the blank. "___ is all there is." love. WTF else would there be?
  95. Is common sense dead? not 'dead' but out of style, for sure
  96. Are you unapproachable? not as much as I'd like to be
  97. Are you the kind of person strangers like to talk to? regrettably, yes. Not in general, but specific strangers--like clerks in quirky little shops, lawyers everywhere, and (inevitably) nervous first-time flyers--are drawn to me.
  98. Do social interactions energize or drain you (in general)? if that's not apparent by this point, there's no point in explaining
  99. What's the longest you have ever gone between sexual encounters? wayyyyy too much information
  100. Compare John Lennon and Kurt Cobain: I don't think that they are "comparable." They did really different things.
[From the 5000-question meme; this is the forty-fifth part (questions 4301-4400). The title quotation is from William Makepeace Thackeray.]
