our emotions are not rational, and should not be instructions for action

When was the last time you tried something new?
I ordered something outside my typical range the last time I visited my favorite local restaurant. It was not to my taste but I was glad to get the chance to try something different.
Who do you sometimes compare yourself to?
comparisons are part of life. I don't think it's anything to worry or apologize about, unless it becomes obsessive. I compare myself to my friends, my sister, my former colleagues and classmates, my exes' currents and exes, and perhaps most strikingly, to the idea that I've had in my mind of where I would be now.
What’s the most sensible thing you’ve heard someone say lately?
Adam Savage, on his Tested podcast, said the title quote, which resonated with me at that moment
What gets you excited about life?
      learning, exploring, and being challenged
What life lesson did you learn the hard way?
that love is not enough to make two people happy
What do you wish you spent more time doing five years ago?
making my job better. I was working for someone that I frankly do not like, who did not like me. That made every day difficult. But we both could have made it better, and easier, if we had looked at my job as an until-retirement career. Neither of us did, and we both failed. I could have been a great asset to that company for another dozen years, and instead I left with bad feelings on both sides.
Do you ask more questions or do you settle for what you know?
I always ask more questions. It can be frustrating when you're on the receiving end - something that I realize because I am on the receiving end of my own questions, more than anyone else.
What’s a belief that you hold with which many people disagree?
that a person can have disparate political beliefs, meaning that one can support something from this party's platform and also something from that party's platform, without being an idiot. Politics doesn't have to be by-the-book.
What can you do today that you were not capable of a year ago?
have less stuff, acquire nothing, and still be satisfied and comfortable
Do you think crying is a sign of weakness or strength?
neither one. Crying is a physiological response to stimuli, whether negative or positive. The ability not to cry is the ability to suppress feelings. Is that strong? Not sure. The tendency to cry easily is a release of emotions. Is that healthy? Not sure. Here's what I do know—a person's frequency or ability or lack of willingness to cry is not a logical, reasoned choice.
What would you do differently if you knew nobody would judge you?
punch a couple of people in the mouth. Have plastic surgery. Adopt a boatload of tiny kittens....
What is the difference between living and existing?
existing is taking a pill to get the necessary calories and nutrients to physically function, while living is making a real meal of it.
