What season has your favorite looks?
fall. Love a good sweater, jeans & boots (the fashionable kind, not the functional)!
Formal or casual?
casual
Thrift store, boutique, or online?
online, then boutique. I'm not anti-thrift store but the ones around here are terrible. I've been struggling with the need to sell some high-end shoes - they are sitting unused in my closet, and I need the money more than I need the shoes. Tried selling them on eBay but they're too expensive and niche for that market. Looked into Poshmark, but their reviews for the selling experience are generally negative. Discovered that Mercari is the best option (from what I can tell), so I'll be listing them soon!
What’s your favorite decade for fashion?
feh. I'm more eclectic in taste, picking and choosing as I feel like at the time.
Do you like to accessorize?
not in so many words. Fashion scarves make me gag. I wear jewelry that's more personal than fashionable or eye-catching. If my outfits are pulled together at all, it's only by virtue of the clothes themselves. And good shoes, of course.
What does your basic outfit look like?
lately I've been defaulting to cargo pants to go with my camisole/cardigan combo, generally with either black suede Sketchers or the omnipresent winter boots
On what piece of clothing have you spent the most money?
other than shoes, or special-occasion dresses for a particular, singular purpose... I have a couple of very expensive blouses. Exact same item in the same size, one black and one white. This should surprise exactly no one who's ever seen my closet.
Do you wear hats?
only when it is very cold or very hot. I have a few handmade woolen caps that I wear when my ear coverings alone won't keep me warm. And I have a couple of baseball caps to keep the worst of the sun off during the summer.
What is your opinion on wearing socks and sandals together?
ugh
What colors do you like to wear?
my wardrobe is primarily blue, black, gray and white, interspersed with some jewel tones in my more upscale stuff, and the ubiquitous neon of runner's garb. I look ridiculous and uncomfortable in super bright colors, though, so that's contained to workouts only.
What fashions do you hate?
as part of the endless cycle of fashion snobbishness, I think we are conditioned to most dislike the style that came just before "our own" - meaning, the first age when we were aware of fashions. For me, that kicked in around age 13, so Seventies style was the worst. I still feel that bias when I see elements of that era seeping back in, like flared-leg jeans, big collars, and block heels.
What are your favorite styles?
preppy. Straight-ish legged jeans, button-up blouses. Cardigans.
What do you think of body piercing?
no strong feelings for or against, though I'm not in the market for any of my own
Do you like dyed hair?
I'd better...
Can you wear heels?
yes
What is the highest heel you can wear?
the tallest ones I currently own are a little over 4", which is probably as high as I could go
Do you have any experience with makeup?
minimal. I'm not great at it.
Have you ever worn a uniform or traditional clothes?
no uniforms. My last in-person job had a strict and detailed dress code (taking up multiple pages of the employee manual) that regulated everything from pants fabric to strap width to pockets. I hated it, and chafed under it, and rebelled against it—both the ridiculously patriarchal policy and the clothes that I had to buy and wear as a result. I don't need to stand out, or even to "express myself" via clothing, but I also don't need to be told what clothing is professionally appropriate. Grrrrrr
How would you describe your current fashion?
"unemployed." It varies between hanging-around-home (in this weather, that's sweatpants, long sleeved t-shirts, and socks) to warm-outdoors (cargo pants, wool socks, and sweaters) to interview clothes (cute cardigans, plaid wool skirts, warm tights, and knee-high leather boots [with wool socks underneath]).
Where do you like to get your clothes?
I'm not in clothes-buying mode. If I was, lately it's been Amazon for the basics and Macy's for everything else.
What’s your favorite piece of clothing?
I have a blue cotton halter dress that ties at the back of the neck. It was inexpensive, is machine-washable, and looks like a million bucks. I haven't had occasion to wear it in a while, but hope to do so once it's warm again.
Have you ever had to wear something you didn’t like?
that made me laugh! There's really nothing like the disconnect between what kids think adults wear, choose to wear, like to wear, and what adults actually have to wear. If you think that childhood is about wearing what someone else decides, just wait 'til you're a grown up!
How do you feel about wearing fur?
I would never - though I'd love to have an obviously fake-fur jacket for fall and spring. Something excessively fluffy or polka dotted, or maybe both.
Do you prefer simple or detailed outfits?
simple outfits, more detailed shoes and jewelry. I like matching those items to the occasion, the clothes, and my mood. Simple outfits allow more latitude there.
How often do you wear jewelry?
every moment of every day
How do you feel about graphic tees?
pretentious and overpriced
Do you have any souvenir clothing from trips or concerts?
yes
Do you paint your nails?
toes all the time, and fingers only for special occasions that merit the lasting damage that it does
What are your favorite pair of shoes?
as I write this, it's the cold, dark, dead of winter. (Current temperature -5º, wind 14 mph, approximate windchill an f'ing bleak -17º.) It's too cold to snow, thank GOD - we don't need anymore f'ing snow - but obviously too cold to melt what's there. And it's everywhere. So walking - besides being uncomfortable and potentially life-threatening - is dangerous. I don't wear shoes in this weather, just an old pair of boots that I bought when I was first married. I've replaced the laces a half dozen times. The boots are too short to allow walking through real snow, but they do the job for what I need to do, like getting the mail or walking from the car to the Post Office or Library.
Do you carry a bag, backpack, purse, or something else?
a purse when I have to (meaning, when I can't fit my wallet, keys & phone in my pockets), or a bookbag when I have to carry a computer or book
What does your hair look like right now?
it's piled up on top of my head in a wavy loop
When do you change your hair style?
when the mood strikes
Would you wear something you or someone you know has made?
definitely. I have some handmade knitted items from a couple of library friends. My mom made some clothes for me when I was young. And I have one tie-dyed shirt that I made for myself.
Have you made any clothes or jewelry?
yes. I was absolute crap at making clothes, so I gave that up pretty quickly. I went through a phase of making jewelry when I was first living by myself, as a way of passing time and keeping busy and also a (relatively) inexpensive way to make gifts. I finally started to develop real skill at it just at the time I had to give it up because the tendonitis in my hands made it painful and awkward. Sigh.
What do you wear to go swimming?
uh, swimwear?
What are your thoughts on perfume/cologne?
I have several, but rarely wear them. My go-to is a man's cologne (oooh!) because women's scents are often too floral or sweet for me.
