The laptop has been fixed. I used System Restore, though it wasn't that easy. I had tried to restore several times yesterday but was stymied. I was successful last night (late) because I am brilliant.
First, I had to create a new User Profile, so that I could access System Restore at all. Then I could log out and log back in, in safe mode. Then I could access System Restore. Then I could try a specific date for Restore. Then I could delete the second User Profile. Then I was able to restart and have my "normal" computer back.
Now all that remains is to run a backup so that sense of terror that I had last night about losing 6000-some photographs will not come to fruition. Care to guess how I'm spending my weekend?
