Today was a day half-lived, as I waited for news. My friend's son (my friend in his own right) is undergoing neurosurgery to remove a tumor called an acoustic neuroma. The time elapsed between the discovery of the tumor and the surgery itself was less than a week. It is an enormously complex process, as you might imagine, and has taken far longer than everyone has hoped. He needed to be at the hospital this morning at 5:AM. Once there, they ran through the gamut of paperwork. Then, following two hours of prep, he entered surgery, at 10:AM--where he remains, probably for a couple more hours as of when I'm writing this, at 10:PM. Readers of the blog at the site (as opposed to by feed, email subscription, or mobile device) may have noticed a widget at the top of the right sidebar. It contains more information about what my friend and his family are facing today, and in the weeks and months ahead. I'm hoping that everyone who reads this will take a moment to think some good thoughts and/or make a prayer, if you're so inclined, on behalf of someone who means a great deal to me.
It's hard to want to help, but to be unable to help except with words. They seem unequal to the task to which I'm setting them.
[the title quotation is by Joe Namath]
