Another weird collection of Amy movies!

Guys & Dolls (1955)
Guys and Dolls (1955) - "In New York, a gambler is challenged to take a cold female missionary to Havana, but they fall for each other, and the bet has a hidden motive to finance a crap game."

I watched it because: I've heard good things

AFI: 25 Greatest Movie Musicals (2006) #23

MPAA rating: not rated

my notes: Brando is a revelation - and Sinatra dry as dust. I didn't love this movie, but it was worth seeing.

overall: recommended

Open Range (2003)
Open Range (2003) - "A former gunslinger is forced to take up arms again when he and his cattle crew are threatened by a corrupt lawman."
Source: I borrowed the DVD from my parents' collection
I watched it because: Kevin Costner's movies are always good, especially the ones that he directed
IMDB: 7.4/10  -  Rotten Tomatoes: Tomatometer: 79% Audience: 84%
notable quote: "Most time, a man will tell you his bad intentions if you listen, let yourself hear."
MPAA rating: R
directed by: Kevin Costner
featuring: Costner, Robert Duvall, Annette Bening, Diego Luna, Abraham Benrubi
my notes: I hadn't heard anything about this film before. It just ... missed me. I'm glad it came back around into my orbit. It's a good old-fashioned Western. Morality play, romance, revenge, and family. Lovely.
overall: recommended

Dazed and Confused (1993)
Dazed and Confused (1993) - "The adventures of high school and junior high students on the last day of school in May 1976."

I watched it because: it had been too long since I'd seen this, one of my all-time faves
IMDB: 7.6/10  -  Rotten Tomatoes: Tomatometer: 92% Audience: 90%
notable quote: "'Have you been drinking?'
    'No'
    'Are you drunk?'
    'Pfffft'"
MPAA rating: R

Hombre
(1967) - "John Russell, disdained by his "respectable" fellow stagecoach passengers because
Hombre (1967)
he was raised by Native Americans, becomes their only hope for survival when they are set upon by outlaws."
Source: I borrowed the DVD from my parents' collection
I watched it because: I like Paul Newman...usually...
IMDB: 7.4/10  -  Rotten Tomatoes: Tomatometer: 93% Audience: 80%
notable quote: "[Marriage is] the price you pay if you want it where you can nudge it in the night."
MPAA rating: not rated
directed by: Martin Ritt
featuring: Paul Newman, Fredric March, Barbara Rush, David Canary
my notes: feh. Newman's character is a snide, patronizing ass. He leads the rest of this crew, literally and figuratively, like a person who doesn't care at all about anyone else. I think he won in the end. Or maybe died. That says it all.
overall: not recommended

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005)
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005) - "After being mistaken for an actor, a New York thief is sent to Hollywood to train under a private eye for a potential movie role, but the duo are thrown together with a struggling actress into a murder mystery."
Source: owned
I watched it because: I was on a date
IMDB: 7.5/10  -  Rotten Tomatoes: Tomatometer: 86% Audience: 87%
notable quote: "'Jesus. Look up 'idiot' in the dictionary. You know what you'll find?'
'A picture of me?'
'No! The definition of the word idiot, which you fucking are!'"
MPAA rating: R
directed by: Shane Black
featuring: Robert Downey, Jr., Val Kilmer, Michelle Monaghan, Corbin Bernsen
my notes: I could see this once a year 'til Doomsday. It's a surprisingly funny, charming, adorable movie—that happens to be a thriller.
