trying hard to be proud and bold about a kind of gift he doesn't know just whom, or how, to give

Here we have a snapshot of a man
presenting to the camera, with two hands,
a twelve-pound northern pike.
Notice how he's pushed it closer to the lens
so it seems bigger than it is.
Notice, too, his eyes—shy and tentative,
as if this picture and this fish are
things he doesn't really understand,
this ritual of holding onto something dead,
and how there must be millions like it—
someone like someone you've probably met,
trying hard to be proud and bold
about a kind of gift he doesn't know
just whom, or how, to give.
