Book Review: Bait

Title: Bait
Author: Karen Robards

Review: Bait isn't quite as scary as Beachcomber, but it is still pretty damned scary. Her books seem to play off of the fears that every woman has, and zero in on that one thing that freaks us out more than anything else.
Maddie Fitzgerald is the owner of a small advertising agency in St. Louis. Her company is up for the Brehmer dog food account, which is so big that it could literally save the company's future. In the hotel room in New Orleans the night before her big pitch, Maddie is trying to get some sleep, but she's had a hard time sleeping for several years. She tells herself that she's on the 20th floor and no one can get to her. She leaves the light on in the bathroom and falls asleep to the sound of the air conditioner. She wakes a few hours later and realizes she's in the dark. Trying to calm herself, she rationalizes that the power must have gone out, but then she hears the air conditioner running....
Sam McCabe is an FBI agent. His path crosses Maddie's and while he's personally drawn to her, he resists. He takes his job seriously, and has only one mission: to apprehend a criminal. Eventually, however, that mission becomes inextricably tied to Maddie. And then he does, too.
It's all quite exciting and swoony. And scary. And exhilarating. A good weekend read (9/10) for the end of summer.
