the image is one thing and the human being is another

What’s something so many people are obsessed with and you just don’t understand why?

Celebrities. Why does anyone care about people who are famous for being famous? People who do nothing other than flaunt themselves on social media, drawing attention to themselves--and seemingly at the same time, who whine about intrusions into their privacy and the ubiquity of paparazzi and tabloid journalism? They are creating their own Hell, and absolutely deserve to inhabit it.
But so do the people who buy that stuff. Those who click the links, subscribe to the feeds, buy the magazines, and worse, who buy the associated items. The cookbooks "written" by the second-generation actress who's mowed through famous significant others at a pretty high rate of speed. The cosmetics shilled by the daughters of someone who's famous for I have no idea what. The albums put out by actors. The films put out by singers. The books of poetry (!), which are rarely enough published by actual poets, marketed by the mainstream press because they were "written" by singers or actors or (gag) bloggers!
My point is this: value originality. Seek out productive, interesting, vital people who contribute to the world in a meaningful way. Stop the self-fulfilling prophecy of pumping up the pointless. Life doesn't have to be all about what we "learn" and "do for others" and "earn". Sometimes chips & salsa and a Coke for dinner is a fantastic treat--just like sometimes reading a trashy novel is sometimes a wonderful escape from the stress of the real world. But don't pretend that you can subsist on that stuff. Feed your mind, your soul, and your conscience.
