sun and the sky took shelter in your shadow

I'm gearing up for National Poetry month, reading and taking notes. This is one of my favorites, by one of my favorites.

It doesn’t matter if the eye, the mind,
and the soul should all get up and leave.
Let them go.
But don’t you ever go away.
Seeing you here
is better than having all of them.

The sun and the sky took shelter in your shadow.
Even the sky and the stars depart.
Don’t go.

O one whose most garbled words
are purer than essence,
let the essence go.
But don’t you go.

The faithful are afraid of being separated from
their faith in their last few breaths.
My only fear is to be separated from you.
Don’t go.

Don’t go.
But if you must, then take my soul with you.

[Jalāl ad-Dīn Muhammad Balkhī {Rumi}, ‘Please Don’t Go’]
